Headwaters Energy Services is a leader in deploying pre-combustion technologies for coal cleaning and low-rank coal upgrading. The company is also a major coal-to-liquid fuels technology provider and project developer and is an innovator in using coal fueled power plant waste heat in the production of liquid biofuels.
These new energy-related activities promise to offer exciting new business opportunities for Headwaters, building on the company’s history and track record of excellence in technological development and application. In particular:
-
Through its subsidiary Covol Engineered Fuels, by the end of 2008 HES will be the owner/operator of eleven waste coal cleaning plants, which recover carbon from waste piles and ponds from previous coal mining/preparation plant operations.
- Headwaters is playing a major role in developing Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) technologies, as
- Developer of a proprietary Direct Coal Liquefaction (DCL) process, which is licensed to a
commercial plant currently starting up in China and which is undergoing feasibility and
engineering studies for clients in China, India, Indonesia and Mongolia
- Project developer for CTL projects in the U.S.
- Headwaters Clean Carbon Services LLC (HCCS) develops and operates carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration sites. HCCS combines the leading CO2 sequestration expertise of the University of Utah with the engineering, management and operating experience of Headwaters Energy Services.
- As fifty-one percent owner of Blue Flint Ethanol, HES is demonstrating the economic viability of
co-locating a major steam consuming processing facility with a coal-fired power plant and using
the plant’s waste heat for the facility’s process energy.
