coal-to-liquids technology

Headwaters Energy Services has developed a direct coal liquefaction (DCL) process used for converting coal into ultra-clean transportation fuels, such as gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel fuel. Headwaters CTL, LLC is licensing this technology internationally. The first commercial DCL plant is starting up in 2008 in China. In addition, feasibility and engineering studies are underway for clients in China, India, Indonesia and Mongolia.

To maintain quality, Headwaters offers a wide range of technical services to support licensing of its DCL technology, including:

• Preliminary feasibility studies
• Pilot plant tests on representative coal samples
• Feasibility studies
• Basic engineering design packages
• Review of detailed engineering drawings
• Operator training
• Start up assistance
• Performance testing
• Catalyst supply
• Plant audits and troubleshooting

In addition, Headwaters is acting as project developer and evaluating process applicability and economic feasibility for a number of CTL projects in the U.S.
