Headwaters Energy Services’ first coal-based ethanol project is Blue Flint Ethanol, a joint venture between Great River Energy (GRE) and Headwaters. The Blue Flint Ethanol facility is unique in the industry. Most ethanol plants are built with a natural gas-fueled boiler to provide heat for drying; however, in what could become a model for coal- and nuclear-fueled power plants or other industrial facilities that produce large amounts of steam, Headwaters and GRE co-located the Blue Flint Ethanol facility at GRE’s lignite-fueled Coal Creek power plant to use the plant’s waste heat — and thus avoiding having to build its own boiler. The result is one of the industry’s most energy efficient, environmentally friendly facilities and the first directly integrated ethanol plant in the world. Production at Blue Flint began in February of 2007, with the facility processing 18 million bushels of corn into 50 million gallons of ethanol per year.
